Youtube – it’s everywhere these days. You’ve watched the cat playing the piano on it. A friend might have posted a video of their holiday on it. Everyone knows what Youtube is. But did you know that there are Youtube celebrities too?
These Youtube celebrities are just like you and I, except they post videos on Youtube regularly. Their videos are generally viewed hundreds of thousands of times per video, a feat only managed by the top few hundred ranked users of the video-sharing site.
Most of the Youtube celebrities are also partners of Youtube, which means that they gain ad revenue for every view they get on their uploaded videos. Some of the top Youtube users even make a living uploading videos. Here are some of the most entertaining “Youtubers” you should be watching and supporting.
24 year old Natalie Tran from Australia is the face behind communitychannel. Her videos are mostly monologues of her satirical views on life. You will find that most of the topics she talks about hit close to home, such as creating an embarrassing email address when you were younger (you know you are guilty of it). She also “gives advice” on various aspects of life, such as how much one should spend on gifts for friends and even on how to fight (don’t worry, she’s not very good at it).
Her ability to hit the nail on the head every time has gotten her more than 300 million views collectively, making her the 58th most viewed user on the website ever.
CTFxC stands for Charles Trippy Friend Core and is the channel where 26 year old Charles Trippy and his 21 year old fiancé Alli Speed post daily vlogs (or video logs). Not missing a day for the past 600 days, you will get a chance to have a look at how the couple has fun on a day-to-day basis.
As with anybody on the planet, they have their occasional boring days. However, most of their days are spent having fun doing anything imaginable. Alli even documented a few months of her life in Valencia while she was there for an exchange program. It is also there in the city of Spain that Charles proposed to her and got it on video for the world to see. Their proposal video now has 2 million views on Youtube.
With their willingness to share their life with the internet, it is little wonder why they have gotten more than 118 million views on Youtube.
If you are too lazy to keep track on the crazy goings-on of the world, then this might be the channel for you. 24 year old Philip Defranco picks the most interesting stories from world and entertainment news and summarizes them into short videos. He gives a rapid fire commentary on all the news he covers, often leading to humorous yet insightful discussions on most current events.
While you should not expect this to be your one and only news source, he covers enough ground such that you will know of the most major events happening around the globe. Now you can’t say that news is boring!
His particular brand of news coverage has proven extremely popular, gaining him 441 million views collectively which makes him the 27th most viewed user on the website ever.
Social Birds Flock Together!
Tuesday, February 1, 2011
Are you an online socialite? Do you find yourself spending hours upon hours on social networking sites?
Don’t worry, you have no reason to be guilty. A 2010 survey from Nielsen Co. showed that social networking has taken over as the number one online activity, with users spending an average of 22.7 percent of online time on various social networking sites.

It is with these people in mind that Flock, one of the latest web browsers available, was created. Flock fully integrates many social networking services, right into the browser itself.
Users will be prompted to ‘add services’ (Facebook, Twitter etcetera) upon the first start-up of the browser. Subsequent uses of the browser will automatically log the user into all the social networking services they have added, and display the updates they have received since the last time they have logged in.
These updates are organized neatly in a sidebar under the individual tabs for each social networking service. What this means is that users are able to surf the net, yet have a social networking service, such as Twitter, in view at all times. Users are even able to update their statuses or tweet directly from the sidebar!
Flock also made design considerations specially for bloggers. Upon configuring their blogging service, bloggers are able to blog directly from the sidebar. They are also able to drag and drop images into their post directly, further simplifying the user’s blogging experience.
You will also love Flock when doing research for your assignments. Flock has a “web clipboard”, which allows you to drag and drop text, links and images for easier viewing later; Flock is your nifty little research assistant.
Apart from the added features, Flock is very similar to Firefox and Safari. Users of these browsers will find no problems switching to Flock. However, this also means that if you are not a fan of social networking, Flock brings nothing exciting to the table for you.
As it is a relatively new browser, Flock also has a few bugs and glitches from time to time. Certain flash and java pages loaded with errors which put a bump in an otherwise smooth surfing experience.
Despite that, at the end of the day Flock is still a stellar web browser for a newcomer. Wait for an update to fix the few minor bugs if you do not need the extra features; you are not missing out on anything by sticking with a browser like Firefox or Safari. But if you like social networking, then Flock together with other socialites today!

Websites to brighten up your day
Monday, November 29, 2010
After hours of dreary research on the internet, here are some websites to make your cyber life a little more interesting.
1000 Awesome Things (www.1000awesomethings.com)1000 Awesome Things is as the name states, a collection of the best things in life. Each awesome thing is coupled with a short explanation which will often have you nodding along in agreement. Some of the things mentioned range from the trivial – such as when a stranger laughs at a joke between you and your friends - or the innocent – such as when your parent checks to see that there are no monsters under your bed.
Needless to say, this site is sure to brighten up your day.
Hyperbole and a Half (www.hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com)At first glance, Hyperbole and a Half might look like a collection of very enthusiastic childish scrawls. However, read on and you will find many hilarious situations depicted in said sketches. One of her most famous posts has her griping about how people use the word “alot” instead of “a lot”. She finds it incredibly annoying but overcomes it by imagining that the person using the erroneous word is talking about a monster she dreamt up called “alot”. So when you say something like “I drink this alot”, she’s probably thinking of a watery monster that you are drinking from.
The author’s bizarre logic on the many things in life is often side-splittingly funny. And if we dare admit, sometimes we see some sense in her seemingly insane ramblings.
The Scott Adams Blog (www.dilbert.com/blog)You might have heard of Scott Adams before as he is the creator of the popular comic strip, Dilbert. He is also the 12th most influential management thinker in 2005 as ranked by Suntop Media & the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).
His blog is as what anyone would expect from him – a collection of deep thoughts on many issues ranging from the environment to marriage. One such example is when he wanted to build a new home after getting married to his wife. He considered what would be the most energy-efficient way to build and maintain a home and included those ideas in the design of his home. He goes on to explain each idea and subsequently got his ideas published in the Wall Street Journal. He now lives in that home with his wife and cat.
He often brushes off what he writes as being inaccurate and therefore flawed, but he makes much more sense than most analysts could hope of being. Prepare to be enlightened on all issues.
Jason Hahn’s Blog (www.saffyamanda.blogspot.com)Jason Hahn is a well-known columnist at 8DAYS. His weekly column “First Person” in the local magazine is loved by many for its funny take on Singaporean life. This blog is a collection of those articles published weekly.
For those unacquainted with the column, it mostly revolves around his views on various happenings in Singapore as well as the lives of his exasperated housemates, Saffy and Amanda (hence the blog title). He details how Saffy and Amanda constantly get disappointed in the dating game and how his various comical friends look at local issues.
A blog with a strong burst of Singaporean flavor, this blog will touch on many issues you’re familiar with, adding some humor to make it all go down easy. Plus, it’s free and articles are posted weeks before they get published in 8DAYS.
Stuff No One Told Me (www.stuffnoonetoldme.blogspot.com)Ever wish there was someone who told you about the more important lessons in life? Stuff No One Told Me is a blog with beautifully illustrated lessons that everyone can benefit from. While most of the lessons are things you already know, it is still nice to have a reminder on some of the more important things in life. Expect lessons such as “things are just things, don’t get too attached to them” and “no one will grant your wishes, you better make them happen”. Tough but true.
